Acre Calculator

Convert land dimensions or an existing area into acres. Use the conversion tool below for common units, then open Field Measure Pro if you need to trace a field or property boundary on a map.

What this page helps you do

An acre is a unit of area commonly used for land. If you know a plot’s area in square metres, square feet or hectares, you can convert it to acres. If you only know the side lengths of a rectangular plot, calculate the area first.

Use the tools and examples as a starting point, then verify important dimensions with appropriate equipment or a qualified professional.

Enter an area you already know. This converts units; it does not verify the land boundary.

How to measure

Acre conversion formulas

1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m²; 1 acre = 43,560 square feet; 1 hectare = 2.47105381 acres. Values shown here are mathematical conversions, not survey results.

Example: dimensions to acres

A rectangular plot measuring 100 m by 40 m has an area of 4,000 m². Divide by 4,046.8564224 to get approximately 0.988 acres.

Irregular plots and fields

For non-rectangular land, use a boundary polygon rather than multiplying the longest length by the widest width. Make sure the boundary follows the intended property or field edge.

Use measurements responsibly

Map and GPS measurements can differ from official records. For purchase, registration, dispute resolution or construction set-out, confirm the requirements with a qualified local surveyor or relevant authority.

Common questions

How many square feet are in one acre?

One acre is 43,560 square feet.

How do I convert hectares to acres?

Multiply hectares by approximately 2.47105381.

Can an acre calculator measure an irregular field?

A conversion calculator converts an area you already know. An irregular field must first be measured using a polygon, map or survey method.
