Property Boundary Measurement

Estimate a property’s area and perimeter by recording boundary points or drawing a polygon on a map. Learn how to review the outline and when a professional survey is necessary.

What this page helps you do

Property boundary measurement is more than tracing a shape: you must identify the intended boundary correctly. Map imagery, fences, hedges and visible features do not always match legal property lines or official cadastral records.

Use the tools and examples as a starting point, then verify important dimensions with appropriate equipment or a qualified professional.

How to measure

Prepare before measuring

Identify the boundary you intend to estimate and check available records. If the boundary is disputed or unclear, do not infer ownership from imagery or a fence line alone.

Measure with GPS or a map

If accessible, walk the perimeter and collect location points with a clear view of the sky. Alternatively, place map points at each corner and important change of direction. Close the polygon and inspect every segment before saving.

Review area and perimeter

Area describes the surface enclosed by the polygon; perimeter is the total length around it. Compare the shape and values with your expectations and any trustworthy documents. A visually plausible polygon can still be positioned incorrectly.

When to hire a surveyor

For buying or selling land, boundary disputes, construction, registration or legal submissions, consult a qualified local surveyor and the applicable authority. Field Measure Pro is a practical estimation tool, not a legal boundary determination service.

Measurement note: Field Measure Pro provides practical map/GPS estimates. Accuracy depends on input dimensions, device GPS, map imagery, boundary selection and field conditions. It is not a legally certified survey.

Common questions

Does a fence always mark the legal boundary?

No. A fence or visible feature may not coincide with the legally recorded boundary.

Can GPS replace a property survey?

No. Consumer GPS and map-based app measurements are not a replacement for a legally accepted survey.

What is perimeter?

Perimeter is the total distance around the boundary; area is the amount of surface enclosed.
