Field Area Calculator

Estimate the size of a farm field for planning, crop allocation or a preliminary area check. Use dimensions for simple shapes or trace an irregular field boundary on a map.

What this page helps you do

A field area calculation is only as good as the shape and boundary data used. Rectangular fields can be calculated from length and width. Irregular fields usually need several boundary points and a polygon calculation.

Use the tools and examples as a starting point, then verify important dimensions with appropriate equipment or a qualified professional.

Rectangular field calculator

Use only when the field is reasonably rectangular. Enter both dimensions in metres.

20,000 m² · 2 hectares · 4.942 acres

How to measure

Rectangular field calculation

Measure length and width in metres, then multiply them to get square metres. Divide square metres by 10,000 to get hectares, or by 4,046.8564224 to get acres.

Measuring an irregular field

Walk the perimeter with GPS where practical, or place points along the visible boundary on a map. Include important turns and corners, close the polygon, and inspect the outline for accidental crossings or missed sections.

Example calculation

A rectangular field 250 m long and 80 m wide has an area of 20,000 m², equal to 2 hectares or about 4.942 acres. A field with a different shape needs its actual boundary rather than this rectangular approximation.

Plan with a margin of uncertainty

Slope, vegetation, unclear boundaries, GPS drift and map alignment can change the estimate. For crop planning, compare the calculated area with local records and repeat measurements when results look implausible.

Measurement note: Field Measure Pro provides practical map/GPS estimates. Accuracy depends on input dimensions, device GPS, map imagery, boundary selection and field conditions. It is not a legally certified survey.

Common questions

What is the easiest way to calculate a farm field?

Use length × width for a rectangle. For an irregular field, trace the boundary as a polygon.

Can the result be shown in acres and hectares?

Yes. Once the area is calculated, it can be converted between square metres, acres and hectares.

Can I use the result for crop planning?

It can support preliminary planning, but check the result against reliable local records where precision matters.
