GPS Land Measurement
Learn how to estimate field area and perimeter using a phone’s GPS or a map-based boundary tool. Get practical tips for recording cleaner boundaries and understanding the limits of consumer GPS.
What this page helps you do
GPS land measurement records location points around a boundary and uses those points to estimate distance, perimeter and area. It is useful for field planning and preliminary checks, but performance varies with the phone, satellite visibility, terrain and how carefully the boundary is followed.
Use the tools and examples as a starting point, then verify important dimensions with appropriate equipment or a qualified professional.

How GPS field measurement works
A phone estimates its position from satellite signals. A measurement app records a series of points along the boundary and calculates a line or polygon from those coordinates. More points do not automatically mean more accuracy: points should represent the actual boundary and be collected with a stable signal.
Tips for a better result
Walk slowly and safely along the boundary; keep the phone where it has a clear view of the sky; pause near corners if needed; avoid measuring under dense tree cover or beside tall buildings when possible; and repeat the measurement to compare results.
GPS versus drawing on a map
GPS walking can be helpful when you can physically follow the perimeter. Map drawing can be more convenient when the boundary is visible in satellite imagery or when access is limited. In either case, zoom in and review each corner before saving.
Accuracy and legal boundaries
Consumer GPS may drift by several metres or more in challenging conditions. Imagery may be old, misaligned or unclear. Use these results for estimates and planning, not as proof of ownership or a certified boundary survey.
Common questions
Does phone GPS measure land exactly?
No. Phone GPS is an estimate and can drift due to signal conditions, obstacles and device hardware.
Can I measure without walking around the field?
A map-based polygon can estimate area if you can identify the boundary on the map.
Should I use GPS measurements for a legal dispute?
Do not rely on a consumer app as a legal survey. Consult a qualified surveyor and the relevant land records authority.
